Skepticism

I tend to agree with these views....the signatories account for HALF of global emissions even though over 140 countries have signed the more proactive Kyoto Protocol.... it's great that *something* is signed, but looking at the wording and presentation of the agreement, the bit I've bolded about economic development should bring up a red flag. All I have to say is the US just vetoed some harmless, future-oriented clauses for clean alternative energy sources from the latest energy bill this month. Cooperation towards a greener future? Only if greener is defined as more greenbacks in the hands of Big Oil!

The Scotsman - International - Doubts on US-led alternative to Kyoto: "The six countries, which account for nearly half the world's greenhouse emissions, said the pact would 'seek to address energy, climate change and air pollution issues within a paradigm of economic development'.

A fact sheet issued by the White House said the countries 'will focus on voluntary practical measures ... to create new investment opportunities, build local capacity, and remove barriers to the introduction of clean, more efficient technologies. This partnership will help each country meet nationally designed strategies for improving energy security, reducing pollution, and addressing the long-term challenge of climate change.'"
