I receive this news with mixed blessings. Croatia—Zagreb to be specific—is on its way to a more prominent role on the map. Whiz Airways today announced that it would begin service between London and Zagreb in late March for prices as low as 15 Euros (!). Croatia is already a booming tourist destination for Europeans, and this will probably open it up to more travelers coming in from outside the continent, particularly students abroad. I don’t see this as having much of an effect on Croatia’s business economy, but it should be a great boost to tourism, adding jobs and infusing the economy with more valuable tourist dollars. I just hope it doesn’t wipe Croatia’s charms off the map with the construction of homogenous all inclusive-type resorts. The dance between heritage and preservation coupled with economic advancement is always a difficult one, but many nations and locales have found success in the past.
