Debate Pops Open Over Soda Warnings: "Yesterday, consumer activists and food manufacturers traded rhetorical barbs in the ongoing debate over whether government regulation or stricter voluntary industry standards are needed to address concerns about the marketing of food to children."
Thought I'd throw up a WaPo story for a change. Another battle in the ongoing war for suburban conservatives, overactive PTAs and the lot (to grossly stereotype just a bit) to deny responsibility and try to blame everything on malicious big business. Marketing/advertising *can* be insidious, especially to impressionable youth, but PLEASE--learn how to say NO and start actually parenting your kids! You don't want them to drink soda? Don't keep it in the house! Want them to exercise? Get off the couch and set an example--you're a role model, even if they don't tell you that.
Government involvement in certain arenas of life is often merited--we're a weak species and a weak nation and need some legal push on occassion... but this is just absurd. Probably the same camp that tries to ban Catcher in the Rye or James Joyce for being to incendiary or pornographic.
