The New York Times > Opinion > Op-Ed Columnist: The Values-Vote Myth
Great column from an old favorite. Tramples the whole Democratic camp's whining about everyone voting on faith and a backwards America etc etc. Sure, the "religious right" exists, but the election was a lot more complicated than that. In many ways, Kerry was a new Gore, pompous, stuffy, intellectual. Also, there is some merit to the whole "flip flop" campaign. Usually, I'd like to think, Kerry changed his preferences based on newly available information, still, the strong possibility exists in an alarming number of instances (I hope still the minority) that Kerry voted across the board for personal gain, pandering for votes, influence, money, etc. Who knows--I just know it WAS NOT the born again v the rest of us in this election.
